Protect Your Accounts: The 45-Minute Security Checklist
You do not need to be an expert to be a hard target. This one checklist, done once, blocks the attacks that actually compromise ordinary accounts.

Minutes 0 to 15: the keys to everything
Turn on two-factor authentication for your primary email first, using an authenticator app rather than text messages where possible. Email is the master key because every password reset flows through it. While you are there, check the list of devices and sessions signed in, and remove anything you do not recognize.
Minutes 15 to 30: passwords, fixed properly
Install a password manager and change your five most important passwords to long, unique ones it generates: email, bank, main shopping account, social media, and your phone carrier. Reuse is the real danger: one leaked site should never unlock your bank.
Minutes 30 to 40: the phone carrier trick
Account takeovers often start at the phone carrier, where a scammer moves your number to their SIM and intercepts your codes. Set a carrier PIN or port-out lock in your carrier account, and never share codes sent to you, with anyone, ever. Legitimate companies do not ask.
Minutes 40 to 45: updates and backups
Turn on automatic updates for your phone and computer, and confirm your photos and key documents are backed up in one place that is not the same device. Updates close the holes that ransomware and spyware walk through.
What good looks like
After 45 minutes, a thief with your password still cannot get in, a leaked password harms one account only, and a lost phone is an inconvenience instead of a catastrophe. That is what a hard target feels like: boring, in the best way.
